Exploring Mosaics

I've always held a deep admiration for the mosaic entranceways in Dublin and more recently in Sligo. Inspired, I embarked on a journey to learn more about these mosaics and infuse contemporary mosaic techniques with my unique lettering style.

Irish shop entrance mosaics have a rich history intertwined with the country's cultural and architectural evolution. These mosaics often serve as charming and distinctive features, showcasing a blend of artistic expression and commercial identity.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ireland saw a surge in mosaic artistry. Many shops incorporated mosaic entrance designs to attract customers and convey a sense of elegance and prosperity. These mosaics were meticulously crafted using colourful ceramic tiles, forming intricate patterns, shop names or even Celtic motifs.

However, with the economic challenges of the mid-20th century, many traditional mosaic entranceways fell into disrepair or were removed. Fortunately, there has been a resurgence of interest in preserving and restoring these cultural gems in recent years. Today, Irish shop entrance mosaics stand as both relics of the past and vibrant pieces of contemporary urban culture.

My inaugural mosaic project adornes a house entrance with the inviting word 'Hello,' much to the client's delight. The space measured approximately 80x50cm, and my research led me to gather the necessary materials:

  • A mesh, serving as the foundation for tile placement

  • Ceramic tiles, which I meticulously cut into quarters, embracing their irregular charm

  • Tile cutters

  • Wood adhesive

  • Mosaic tweezers

  • Abundant reserves of patience and time—lessons learned as the project unfolded

As I delved into the craft, I discovered the meditative joy of cutting and placing the tiles, feeling entirely immersed in the process. Like any art, practice refined my skills, especially when navigating curved edges. Tapering the square tiles just right was the key to ensuring they smoothly hugged the contours without disruption. This took quite some time to get the hang of. Luckily the script lettering had multiple curves so I had ample opportunity to practise this.

The design is quite traditional. Black lettering with a white outline around the lettering and fan shape background with a black border. At times, simplicity proves to be the best design solution.

The mosaic was moved to the entrance where it was installed. Concrete was laid first to level the surface for the mosaic. The mesh with the mosaic was glued to the floor with tile adhesive and then grout rubbed in between the tiles to seal it. My 'Hello' mosaic will continue to extend a warm welcome to all their future guests.

I eagerly await future mosaic projects. If you would like to commission a mosaic project please contact me.
